This Could Be The Last Resolution You Ever Make

Are you a resolution maker?

I’ve been making resolutions all my life. Here’s a new one.

Resolved: I am not going to make any more resolutions.

I caught myself doing it again yesterday. When I think of a good practice I would like to try, I immediately think that “I should do this every day for the rest of my life.” This is before I even try it out once.

This week I thought about TED talks. They are so interesting and informative. My resolution-making brain told me, “I should watch one TED talk every day.” It’s not enough to just watch one and enjoy it; I keep looking for ways to build a new, better me.

The TED talk resolution is just the latest addition to my long list of “shoulds”.

  • I should meditate every morning
  • I should write my morning pages every morning
  • I should walk the dog every day (We have  a fenced back yard so lots of days, I just open the back door and let Tramp take responsibility for his own exercise and entertainment)
  • I should do yoga every day before I get any stiffer
  • I should eliminate sugar from my diet
  • I should stop drinking caffeinated drinks
  • I should make sure to wash those last few dishes that always end up in the sink at bedtime.
  • I should do all my shoulds before checking email in the morning.

What about you? Are you still trying to do more and do better every day? When is it enough?

I asked a friend the other day, “When do I get to just relax and be me?”

Her reply was, “You get to decide when enough is enough.”

But these shoulds are just so good. I can’t pitch this list. Maybe I can edit it.

  • I should could meditate every this morning
  • I should can write my morning pages every morning that I feel like it.
  • I should think I’ll walk Tramp today. the dog every day. We have  a fenced back yard so some days, I just open the back door and.  (Tomorrow I might let Tramp take responsibility for his own exercise and entertainment in the back yard)
  • I should do love yoga. I’ll do some today every day before a get any stiffer
  • I should really want to eliminate sugar from my diet
  • If I should stop drinking caffeinated drinks, I bet I’ll sleep better.
  • I shouldmake sure to wash those last few dishes that always end up in the sink at bedtime. It’s nice to wake up and see an empty kitchen sink, but the sink police haven’t busted me yet.
  • I should do all my shoulds before checking email in the morning. I’m going to read email any time I please.

How would you revise your “should list?”
